Elon Musk, the tech mogul and CEO of Tesla, has announced the creation of the America Party, a new political party aimed at reshaping the U.S. political landscape.
Musk made the declaration on Saturday, just a day after asking his followers on X whether a new political party should be formed.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!” he wrote on X.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.
“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Musk’s push to “reform” the American political system gained momentum following a fallout with President Donald Trump over the contentious “Big Beautiful Bill.”
Trump signed the bill Friday afternoon after it cleared both chambers of Congress. The legislation includes tax cuts, increased defense spending, and tougher immigration measures. To offset the tax cuts and spending boosts, the bill introduces cuts to key social services, including Medicaid, the government health insurance program for low-income families.
Trump claimed Musk opposed the bill because it impacted an electric vehicle (EV) mandate that could affect Tesla’s sales. But Musk rejected that assertion.
During his final days as one of Trump’s advisers, Musk publicly expressed disappointment over the bill. His remarks sparked a public war of words with the president on social media.
Musk accused Trump of ingratitude, saying:
“Without my help, Trump would have lost the election.”
In response, Trump warned of “serious consequences” if Musk financed Democratic candidates to challenge Republicans who supported the legislation.
As the U.S. Senate debated the bill on Monday ahead of the final vote, Musk warned lawmakers:
“Those in favour of the proposal would lose their primary next year.”
