Human rights activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has regained his freedom after being held in what he described as “unjust, unwarranted, and unlawful detention” by the Nigeria Police Force.
Announcing his release in a statement posted on social media, Sowore accused the police, under what he called an “illegal Inspector General of Police,” of bowing to the pressure of the revolutionary movement and public outrage.
“Nigeria Police Force @PoliceNG and its illegal IGP has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, unwarranted, and unlawful detention,” Sowore stated.
While expressing gratitude to supporters who stood by him throughout the ordeal, Sowore maintained that his release was not a cause for celebration but rather a reminder of the ongoing struggle against oppression.
“However, it is nothing to celebrate, work tongues, but I can’t do without thanking you all for not giving up. You’ve all seen the power of unity,” he said.
Sowore’s detention, the details of which have drawn widespread condemnation from civil society groups and rights advocates, is the latest in a series of confrontations between the activist and Nigerian security agencies.
Supporters hailed his release as a victory for collective action, while Sowore reiterated his commitment to pushing forward with the revolutionary agenda.
