Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday made fresh claims regarding the now-concluded 2023 presidential election.

There have been widespread assertions, particularly among Peter Obi’s supporters, that the Labour Party candidate won the 2023 polls. Obi challenged the results up to the Supreme Court, but President Bola Tinubu’s victory was ultimately upheld.

Amaechi, who is now seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has re-echoed the claim that Obi won in Rivers State.

Speaking during an X Space discussion on Saturday, Amaechi said:

“I can agree with you to some extent that Obi won Rivers State.
But I don’t know how the results were changed.”

Despite figures uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) result viewing portal (IReV), INEC announced Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner in Rivers State. According to the official results, APC garnered 231,591 votes, while LP polled 175,071 votes. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came third with 88,468 votes.

During the same interview, Amaechi also set a condition for backing whoever emerges as the ADC’s presidential candidate. He vowed to throw his weight behind the party’s flagbearer if chosen through a transparent process.

“In a free and fair primary, whoever wins will have my full support. I will be deeply devoted to the campaign and will do everything in my ability to help ADC unseat this current clueless government.
I will abandon the coastal road, that road is for stealing.
Electoral reforms are the lowest hanging fruits for me if I become President.
There will be electoral reforms in my first six months.”

Amaechi also claimed he knows the “secret” to defeating President Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Apart from Amaechi, Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have also expressed interest in clinching the ADC’s presidential ticket.
