The Embassy of the United States, Abuja has issued a security advisory to its citizens ahead of the planned “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest scheduled to take place in Abuja on Monday, October 20, 2025.
In a statement on its website, the Embassy warned that the demonstrations, expected to occur around Eagle Square and the Central Business District, could lead to roadblocks, heavy traffic, and possible violent confrontations between protesters and security agencies.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that the Free Nnamdi Kanu Now protest has called for peaceful demonstrations on Monday, October 20th, 2025, in Abuja. There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protestors that could turn violent,” the statement read.
The Embassy strongly advised U.S. citizens to avoid the protest areas and minimize movement throughout the city on the protest day.
“The Embassy advises all U.S. citizens to avoid this area and to severely limit all movement throughout the city on Monday, October 20th. The Embassy recommends children in Abuja stay home from school and domestic staff that travel from outside of Abuja to stay home as well,” it added.
The advisory also outlined key security measures for U.S. nationals, including avoiding protest zones, steering clear of large crowds, monitoring local media for updates, and maintaining heightened awareness of their surroundings.
