Rhino Homes and Properties Limited, the official developer and concessionaire of the Ekeoha Shopping Centre in Aba, has dismissed as false and misleading a report by Sahara Reporters claiming that “many were feared dead” following a minor props failure at Block D of the ongoing reconstruction project.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the company condemned the publication as sensational and grossly unprofessional, stressing that no life was lost and no injuries were recorded during the incident.
According to the developer, the minor technical issue occurred in one of the sections being handled by a sub-contractor, Van Daniels Construction Company, and was immediately contained by site engineers.
“It is deeply regrettable and highly disappointing that a media platform of Sahara Reporters’ stature could descend to the level of peddling unverified claims without basic fact-checking or a courtesy call for clarification,” the company stated. “Such unethical journalism not only misleads the public, but also undermines the credibility of the media profession itself.”
Rhino Homes described the report as a deliberate attempt to create fear and tension among traders, investors, and residents, insisting that it grossly misrepresented the facts of the incident.
“The report paints a false picture of chaos where none existed. It is unfortunate that a platform that ought to uphold the principles of responsible reporting chose instead to engage in careless sensationalism,” the statement continued.
While acknowledging that the technical fault was “unfortunate and regrettable,” the company reaffirmed its strong commitment to safety, transparency, and accountability in the ongoing reconstruction of the shopping centre—an iconic commercial hub in Aba.
“We wish to make it abundantly clear that no life was lost, no injury was sustained, and normal work will soon resume at the site. Our safety procedures remain intact, and all contractors are under strict obligation to comply with standard engineering protocols,” the company reiterated.
Rhino Homes further cautioned Sahara Reporters and other media organisations against publishing unfounded and unverified claims that could mislead the public.
“We challenge Sahara Reporters and any individual or organisation with contrary evidence to present such proof publicly,” the statement added.
“We remain focused on delivering a modern, safe, and world-class shopping complex that will serve the people of Aba and beyond. We urge members of the public to disregard the misleading publication and rely only on verified information from credible and responsible sources.”
