The Mburubu Ancient Kingdom in Enugu State is set to come alive on Saturday, November 1, 2025, as the community gathers for a spectacular New Yam Festival (Iri Ji) in honour of one of its most distinguished sons, High Chief (Dr.) Engr. Ozo Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe (Ozo Chinyereugo I of Mburubu Ancient Kingdom).
In a statement jointly signed by Chief Onwuka Ezekwe (Cabinet Secretary), Ozo Patrick Igbudu (Secretary, Ndi Ozo Mburubu), Ozo Felix Chukwu (Ezeani of Mburubu Ancient Kingdom), Mr. Anthony Ani (Coordinating Chairman, Council of Village Chairmen), and Chief Ositadimma Ezeh (Chairman, Mburubu Youth Council), the festival will take place at High Chief Onuokaibe’s residence in Uhuagba, Mburubu, beginning at 11 a.m.
The organizers described the festival as a cultural homecoming of colour and pride, featuring traditional dances, masquerade performances, live music, comedy, wrestling, and a feast of local delicacies that will showcase the enduring beauty of Igbo heritage.
They emphasized that the Iri Ji Festival remains a sacred celebration of thanksgiving, unity, and renewal, marking the end of a successful farming season and the beginning of another.
“This is a time of gratitude to God and a reaffirmation of our shared identity as Mburubu people,” the statement read.
Expected at the grand occasion are prominent dignitaries, traditional rulers, cultural enthusiasts, and guests from across Enugu State and beyond, who will join in celebrating High Chief Onuokaibe, lauded as “a pillar of community development and a symbol of humility and service.”
Speaking with journalists ahead of the event, High Chief Onuokaibe expressed heartfelt appreciation to God and his community for the honour, describing the celebration as “a festival of identity and unity.”
“The New Yam Festival is not just a tradition; it is our story as Ndi Igbo — a story of gratitude, peace, and continuity,” he said.
“It strengthens our brotherhood, reinforces our communal spirit, and inspires our youth to embrace the values of diligence, culture, and service.”
High Chief Onuokaibe further commended Ndị Ákwá Mburubu, youth associations, and women leaders for their tireless efforts in preserving the rich heritage of the kingdom. He urged everyone to continue supporting initiatives that foster development, peace, and cultural pride.
He also extended a warm invitation to friends, well-wishers, and lovers of culture to attend in large numbers, assuring them of a vibrant atmosphere, warm hospitality, and unforgettable moments that reflect the true spirit of Mburubu Ancient Kingdom.
