The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced the arrest of a romance scam syndicate operating in Kasoa, within Ghana’s Central Region, following a coordinated security operation.
The early-morning raid, carried out on Saturday, December 13, by the Cyber Security Authority, led to the arrest of 32 Nigerian nationals allegedly linked to the organised cybercrime network.
Confirming the development in a social media post later the same day, the minister reaffirmed the government’s resolve to clamp down on cybercrime and ensure that Ghana does not serve as a safe haven for digital fraudsters.
“Kudos to the team at the Cyber Security Authority Ghana once again,” George wrote.
“This dawn, another massive blow has been struck against cybercrime in Ghana. A joint operation between the Authority and National Security resulted in the arrest of 32 Nigerians operating a romance scam syndicate in Kasoa Tuba.
“We will continue to support the Authority in its efforts to do more as we make Ghana an unattractive destination for cybercrimes,” the minister added.
The arrests come just days after the apprehension of Ghanaian social media personality Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, in connection with a high-profile cyber fraud case.
The 31-year-old, who is widely known for flaunting cash and luxury properties on Snapchat, is accused of playing a central role in an $8 million romance scam that allegedly targeted elderly Americans.
Minister George had earlier disclosed that security agencies were closing in on additional suspects, noting that three more arrests are expected in the coming days as investigations continue.
