President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles for their bronze medal triumph at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), praising the team’s resilience and fighting spirit after a difficult run in the tournament.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on January 17, 2026, the President commended the Nigerian national team for bouncing back from the disappointment of their semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco to secure third place at the continental competition.

According to the statement, the Super Eagles showed character and determination as they defeated seven-time AFCON champions, Egypt, via a penalty shootout after dominating regulation time in the bronze medal match.

President Tinubu noted that the victory once again reflected the determination, persistence and can-do spirit that Nigerians are known for.

“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed,” the President said.

“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.”

He added that Nigerians would take pride in the team as they receive their medals in Rabat, Morocco.

“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco,” Tinubu stated.

Expressing heartfelt appreciation to the players, the President concluded: “Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”
