The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released the official list of 114 universities authorised to run law programmes in Nigeria, warning institutions against admitting students into the course without its approval.
In a circular issued on Friday, the council stated that only universities listed by the regulatory body are permitted to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme, stressing that institutions operating law programmes without authorisation risk sanctions.
The circular, signed by Aderonke Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, warned that any university admitting law students without the council’s approval would be in violation of regulations governing legal education in Nigeria.
“The public is further informed that any university that admits students into a Law programme without the approval of the Council of Legal Education is acting contrary to the provisions regulating legal education in Nigeria and will be subject to appropriate sanctions in accordance with extant regulations and policy,” the circular stated.
The council also advised prospective students and parents to verify the accreditation status of universities before seeking admission into law programmes.
According to the CLE, graduates of law from institutions not approved by the council will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School, which is mandatory for qualification as a legal practitioner in Nigeria.
The body added that the list of accredited universities would be reviewed and updated periodically in line with its statutory mandate to regulate legal education and maintain professional standards.
