The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) Plc has commissioned a new Sick Bay at its corporate headquarters in Enugu, strengthening its commitment to employee welfare and workplace healthcare.

The facility, officially unveiled on Monday, is designed to provide immediate first aid and basic emergency care for employees, customers, and visitors who may suffer sudden illness or injury within the company’s premises.

Speaking during the commissioning, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of EEDC, Engr. Vincent Ekwekwu, said the initiative reflects the company’s people-first philosophy and underscores its commitment to staff wellbeing.

According to him, the health and welfare of employees remain central to the organisation’s overall productivity and operational success.

He explained that the primary goal of the Sick Bay is to stabilise affected individuals and, where necessary, ensure prompt referral or evacuation to appropriate healthcare facilities.

“The objective of the facility is to provide immediate first aid and basic emergency care. It is meant to stabilise affected individuals and, where necessary, facilitate prompt referral or evacuation to the appropriate healthcare facility,” he said.

Ekwekwu, however, clarified that the Sick Bay is not a hospital or a full-service clinic and would not provide long-term medical care, advanced treatment, or surgical procedures.

The Managing Director of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, who performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony to formally open the facility, praised EEDC’s management for prioritising staff welfare.

He noted that given the long hours employees spend at work, the possibility of sudden illness cannot be overlooked, making the Sick Bay a necessary intervention point for urgent medical attention.

“We at MainPower are excited about this development, as we are key beneficiaries of this facility,” he stated.

The company disclosed that the Sick Bay would be managed by a qualified occupational health nurse to ensure staff receive prompt and competent medical attention.

In a move aimed at improving efficiency and innovation, the facility is also powered by an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system developed internally by the EEDC ICT team.

Speaking on the digital health solution, the Chief Information Officer, Engr. Idika Okechukwu, said the EMR application enables seamless management of patient records, appointment scheduling, and real-time health monitoring.

He explained that the system also guarantees confidentiality, accuracy, and easy access to healthcare services.

“Staff can access the facility using their staff numbers, and strict data privacy measures have been implemented to safeguard employees’ medical records and health history,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chief Finance Officer, Mr. Pauli Isiguzo, reaffirmed the company’s resolve to continue investing in staff-focused initiatives, stressing that a healthy workforce remains critical to delivering reliable and efficient electricity services to customers.

Several employees who spoke during the event described the initiative as timely and reassuring, noting that access to immediate healthcare within the workplace improves their sense of security and helps them remain focused on their responsibilities.

With the commissioning of the Sick Bay, EEDC said it is setting a new standard for employee-focused healthcare initiatives in Nigeria’s power sector while reinforcing its broader vision of building a safe, healthy, and productive work environment.
