The traditional ruler of Ogugu Ntu-Egbenese Ancient Kingdom in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, His Royal Highness, Igwe Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, has praised elder statesman and former governor, Jim Nwobodo, over his recent Lifetime Achievement Award from Vanguard Newspaper, describing him as an enduring symbol of leadership, service, and development.

Igwe Ogbonna made the remarks on Saturday while speaking with journalists on the honour conferred on Senator Nwobodo during the Vanguard Personality of the Year Awards held in Lagos State.

He described Nwobodo as one of the brightest sons of the Ntu-Egbenese clan whose contributions to nation-building, Enugu State, and the South East remain visible decades after his tenure in office.

According to the monarch, the award is well deserved because it recognises Nwobodo’s enduring legacy in the development of old Anambra State, which now includes present-day Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi states.

He said the former governor left behind remarkable projects, policies, and programmes that have stood the test of time and continue to benefit the people.

“I am glad to be here today to celebrate an icon of leadership, a leader, father, and mentor to many. This award is recognition of his excellent leadership for our dear state, South East, and Nigeria,” Igwe Ogbonna said.

He recalled that during Nwobodo’s tenure as governor of old Anambra State between 1979 and 1983, he recorded significant developmental achievements across education, infrastructure, tourism, sports, and media.

“Sen Nwobodo, during his tenure as Governor of old Anambra State, recorded several practical achievements between 1979 and 1983 that focused on development across the state. It was he who established the Anambra State University of Science and Technology, as well as colleges of education in Nsugbe and Eha-Amufu, to expand access to higher education.”

“In infrastructure and sports, he built the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and improved roads and public facilities across present-day Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi. To boost tourism and business, he constructed the Nike Lake Hotel and Ikenga Hotels in Enugu, Onitsha, and Awka. He also strengthened media development through the establishment of Anambra State Television. His administration promoted balanced development across different areas, leaving projects that are still in use today,” he added.

The monarch further described Nwobodo as a shining example of selfless leadership and urged younger political leaders to emulate his people-focused style of governance.

He stressed that leadership should be measured by practical results and the long-term impact on the lives of the people rather than political rhetoric.

Igwe Ogbonna also said the recognition should inspire greater unity, hard work, and renewed commitment to community development across the South East and Nigeria as a whole.

He commended Vanguard Newspaper for using its platform to honour excellence and celebrate individuals whose leadership has positively shaped society.

He also prayed for continued grace, strength, and divine guidance for Senator Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo and his family.
