The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action and prosecution over the alleged extra-judicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on April 28, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, following widespread concern over the shooting incident.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, strongly condemned the incident and described the killing as a clear violation of police operational procedures and human rights standards.
“The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, has condemned in strong terms the extra-judicial killing of a suspect, one Mene Ogidi, aged 28 years, which occurred on 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State,” the statement read.
Police said the deceased was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
Operatives attached to Area Command Effurun were said to have acted on credible intelligence from members of the public and moved to the scene to take the suspect into custody.
However, during the operation, ASP Nuhu Usman, who led the team, allegedly discharged his firearm in circumstances the Command described as unlawful, leading to the suspect’s death.
“The police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” the statement added.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police directed the immediate arrest of the officer and his transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba for disciplinary measures.
The Command said the officer has since been queried and moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee currently in session.
“The officer has since been queried and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee… for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution,” the statement said.
The police reiterated their commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rule of law, stressing that the Force maintains zero tolerance for recklessness, lawlessness, and extra-judicial conduct.
“The Command further reaffirms its zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct,” the statement noted.
CP Yemi Oyeniyi also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.
“The CP extends his sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, Mene Ogidi, and assures the bereaved family that the Command is fully committed to ensuring that justice is served,” the statement added.
The police appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring that all necessary steps were being taken to ensure accountability in the matter.
