Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), citing deepening internal crisis within the opposition party.
Mohammed announced the move on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting, confirming weeks of speculation about his political future.
The governor said his decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders and stakeholders nationwide, noting that efforts to stabilise the PDP had failed.
“After careful consideration and wide consultations with leaders and stakeholders across the country, it has become clear that our efforts to restore stability have not yielded the desired results,” he said.
He specifically referenced the recent Supreme Court judgment that nullified the PDP’s national convention led by the Kabiru Turaki faction, describing it as a major setback that further compounded the party’s internal challenges.
The defection marks a significant shift in Bauchi’s political landscape and adds to the ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the next general elections.
