A member of the House of Representatives, Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal crisis within the party and declaring alignment with Peter Gregory Obi.
In a statement dated May 2026, the lawmaker representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency described his exit as a “difficult but necessary step” taken after deep reflection.
“Today, I took a difficult but necessary step — a step guided by conviction, reflection, and an unwavering commitment to the people I represent. I have formally resigned my membership of the ADC,” he said.
Okonkwo attributed his decision to the protracted leadership crisis rocking the party, which has escalated to the courts.
“This decision was not made lightly. It comes at a time when the party is facing deep internal challenges, including a protracted leadership crisis that has now drawn the intervention of the Supreme Court,” he stated.
He noted that the apex court’s directive for the matter to return to the Federal High Court underscores the unresolved nature of the dispute.
“At such a defining moment, leadership must be anchored on clarity, stability, and a unified direction — values that are essential not just for political parties, but for the credibility of our democratic process,” he added.
Despite his exit, the lawmaker expressed appreciation for his time in the ADC but insisted that his priority remains effective representation of his constituents.
“My allegiance has always been, and will always remain, to the good people of Idemili North and South Federal Constituency,” he said.
Emphasising his political philosophy, Okonkwo stressed that governance goes beyond party platforms.
“Politics, for me, is not about platforms alone — it is about purpose. It is about impact. It is about delivering real results and building a future our people can believe in,” he noted.
He revealed that his next political step would be in alignment with Obi, whom he described as a source of inspiration.
“In this next phase of my journey, I move forward with renewed courage and clarity, aligned with the vision of purposeful leadership and national rebirth alongside my mentor and leader, Mr. Peter Obi — a man whose commitment to a better Nigeria continues to inspire millions,” he said.
Okonkwo concluded by framing his defection as a strategic move aimed at enhancing service delivery.
“This is not a departure from service. It is a repositioning for greater service. Idemili comes first. Always. The journey continues.”
