Hon. Nelson Maduka Arum, popularly known as “Mama na Malaga,” has declared his intention to contest for the Enugu East Senatorial seat under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), setting the stage for what could become a high-stakes contest ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Arum, who was the House of Representatives candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019, formally entered the race on Tuesday, bringing with him a strong grassroots following, particularly among younger voters.

Widely regarded as a vibrant and energetic political figure, Arum has built significant appeal among the youth demographic in Enugu East, a factor political observers say could reshape the dynamics of the senatorial contest.

One of his associates told our correspondent that the Hon. Arum will be in the race.

“Yes, Mama na Malaga will be running for Senate under NDC. All the necessary plans are being concluded and everything will be made official soon, ” said the associate who doesn’t want his name in print.

His entry is expected to pose a serious challenge to the incumbent senator, Kelvin Chukwu, as the race gradually gathers momentum.

Arum said his ambition is driven by a commitment to deliver effective representation and champion people-focused policies that address the needs of constituents across the district.

The development underscores the intensifying political realignments in Enugu State, as key actors reposition ahead of the next general elections.
