Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has disclosed that he held talks with the United States Consul General in Lagos, Rick Swart, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and advancing credible elections in Nigeria.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Obi said the meeting centred on promoting electoral integrity and creating a fair political environment for all parties, particularly the opposition.
“This morning, in Lagos, I met with the U.S. Consul General, Mr. Rick Swart, where we discussed strengthening the bilateral relationship. We focused on promoting credible elections in Nigeria, ensuring they are free from interference, and fostering a space where all political parties, especially opposition parties, can thrive and contribute,” he stated.
The former Anambra State governor also noted that discussions extended to economic cooperation, including trade and business opportunities between both countries.
“We also discussed trade and business opportunities between our countries,” he added.
Obi was accompanied to the meeting by Adefolaseye Adebomi Adebayo.
Describing the engagement as fruitful, he expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria’s electoral process.
“The discussion was very productive, and we are hopeful that, moving forward, Nigeria’s elections will be even more credible and transparent,” Obi said.
