A younger brother of slain community leader, Hon. Igwe Akuma of Okon Aku, has commended Governor Alex Otti for intervening in the crisis that rocked the area, while calling for justice over the killing.
Speaking during a live programme on Vision Africa Radio 104.1 FM in Umuahia on Wednesday, Mr. Igwe Uma Akwu described his brother’s death as devastating and demanded accountability for those responsible.
“My brother was everything to us. He was taking care of our parents. His killing is painful and unbearable,” he said.
The grieving brother praised the Abia State Government for setting up a seven-member administrative panel of inquiry to investigate the crisis, which led to the death of Hon. Akuma and widespread destruction of property in the community.
He noted that the government’s decision to receive the panel’s report has renewed hope among residents.
According to him, the intervention demonstrates a commitment to restoring peace and ensuring justice in the troubled community.
While acknowledging the governor’s efforts, Akwu insisted that justice must be swift and decisive.
He described the circumstances surrounding the killing as “cruel and unacceptable,” stressing that society must not tolerate violence against individuals who stand for fairness and truth.
“Justice must not be delayed,” he said, adding that holding perpetrators accountable would not only honour the memory of the deceased but also deter future violence.
The crisis in Okon Aku had sparked tension across the area following reports of violence and property destruction, prompting swift intervention by the state government through the establishment of the investigative panel.
