The Nigeria Democratic Congress has declared its 2027 governorship ticket open to aspirants from all parts of Enugu State, dismissing speculations that the party had zoned the position to any particular senatorial district.
The party said its priority was to field a candidate with the capacity to win the election and unseat the ruling APC government in the state.
Addressing journalists on Friday after a meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC), the Enugu NDC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Ugwueze, said the party deliberately refused to zone the governorship position in order not to “sacrifice capacity on the altar of zoning.”
According to him, any qualified citizen of Enugu State, regardless of senatorial zone, is free to contest for the party’s governorship ticket.
“This decision aligns with the party’s determination to win the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State and to achieve that, we are not going to sacrifice capacity on the altar of zoning.
“Capturing the Lion Building is our major target and we have to exploit every available option and strategy,” Ugwueze said.
The party leadership reiterated its commitment to internal democracy, transparency and inclusiveness, noting that consultations were still ongoing across the three senatorial districts to maintain stability within the party.
The NDC also warned aspirants against alleged “APC agents” within the party, accusing them of working to create division and weaken the party’s electoral chances ahead of 2027.
Ugwueze urged party members to avoid misinformation and premature political speculation, stressing that discussions surrounding the governorship ticket were still ongoing and that a final position would be communicated before the primaries.
He assured members that all decisions taken by the party were guided by equity, justice and collective interest.
“No region or group will be marginalised in the distribution of electoral offices,” he stated, adding that the ongoing restructuring of the party was aimed at building a stronger political platform capable of delivering credible leadership in future elections.
