A civil society organisation, the Abia Conscience Group, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Tunde Disu, to caution former head of the IGP’s Monitoring Unit, Mr. Akin Fakorede, over alleged attempts to interfere in the ongoing Okon-Aku community crisis and related murder case in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

The group alleged that there were growing attempts to influence the judicial process after police investigations into the matter had already been concluded and charges filed before the Abia State High Court.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Umuahia by its Publicity Secretary, High Chief Kenechukwu Kalu, the group claimed supporters of Chief Bernard Kama were already celebrating in the community over alleged assurances that his name would be removed from the charge sheet.

“Ben Kama and his group are already jubilating in Okon that his name which is number one on the charge will be removed from the list as he was been assured by Fakorede,” the statement alleged.

The group expressed concern that the matter, which it said had progressed beyond the investigative stage into active judicial proceedings, was allegedly being subjected to external pressure capable of undermining the administration of justice.

“Why is Akin mounting pressure from Lagos when he was the one that did the investigation and handed the file over to the team? What is his interest, or is the relationship he now has more important than the life of Late Igwe Acha who was tragically killed on the 2nd of January 2026 in Okon?” the group queried.

According to the organisation, any attempt to influence law enforcement authorities or tamper with the charge sheet in favour of any suspect would damage public trust in the justice system and set a dangerous precedent.

The group specifically alleged that there were moves to pressure authorities into removing the name of Chief Bernard Kama, whom it described as the first defendant on the charge filed by the police.

The Abia Conscience Group urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure professionalism, neutrality, and strict adherence to due process by both serving and former officers linked to the matter.

It maintained that justice must be allowed to take its full course without intimidation, political influence, or interference from powerful individuals.
