Prominent industrialist and politician, Chief Nnamdi Iro Orji, popularly known as Opotoyom, has emerged as the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Abia North Senatorial District following the party’s primary election held on May 29, 2026.

The exercise attracted party delegates and members from the five local government areas that make up the senatorial district, with Chief Orji reportedly securing victory ahead of three other aspirants, including former member of the House of Representatives, Uko Nkole.

His emergence is being viewed by party supporters as a significant development ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

In a related development, Ugoeze Elizabeth Ndidiamaka Obioma has also emerged as the NDC’s candidate for the Bende Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

The primary election, described as keenly contested, was held at the Uzuakoli Town Hall in Bende Local Government Area. Despite delays in the commencement of voting, the exercise was concluded successfully, with the professional nurse reportedly polling the highest number of votes to secure the party’s nomination.

The victories of both candidates have generated excitement among party faithful in Abia State as the NDC intensifies efforts to strengthen its position ahead of the next electoral cycle.

However, as of the time of filing this report, the national leadership of the Nigerian Democratic Congress had yet to officially announce the results of the primary elections conducted across the country on May 29.

The delay in releasing the official results has sparked anxiety among party members and election observers who are awaiting formal confirmation of the outcomes.

With the primary elections concluded, attention is expected to shift to the next phase of the electoral process as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 general elections.
