National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for deeper cooperation between Africa and Europe, urging global leaders to support policies that will accelerate economic growth, strengthen democratic institutions and create opportunities for millions of young Africans.
Obi made the appeal while addressing members of the European Parliament, where he highlighted the challenges confronting Nigeria and the African continent and outlined what he described as practical pathways to sustainable development and prosperity.
In the widely circulated address, Obi argued that Africa’s future would be determined largely by the quality of leadership on the continent, the strength of its institutions and the capacity of governments to harness the potential of their rapidly growing youth population.
He stressed that strategic investments in education, entrepreneurship, innovation and human capital development remain essential to unlocking Africa’s economic potential and lifting millions out of poverty.
The former Anambra State governor maintained that no nation can achieve meaningful progress without accountable leadership and transparent public institutions, emphasizing that citizens must have confidence in those entrusted with public office.
Obi also called for stronger partnerships between African nations and international stakeholders, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, technology transfer and capacity building.
According to him, enhanced collaboration between Africa and Europe is critical to addressing shared global challenges and creating sustainable opportunities for economic advancement.
Political observers and members of the Nigerian diaspora have since welcomed Obi’s appearance before the European Parliament, describing it as an opportunity to draw international attention to issues affecting Nigeria and the wider African continent.
The engagement comes at a time when discussions around economic reforms, governance, insecurity and development strategies continue to dominate public discourse in Nigeria ahead of future political contests.
Obi’s address has also generated significant reactions online, with many supporters praising his emphasis on leadership, institutional reforms and youth empowerment as key drivers of Africa’s development agenda.
