Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has commended the successful hosting of the maiden Annual Memorial Lecture in honour of late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, describing the former National Electoral Commission (NEC) chairman as one of Nigeria’s most outstanding democratic icons whose legacy continues to inspire the struggle for electoral integrity and accountable governance.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation praised the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Prof. Humphrey Nwosu Centre for Democracy and Human Rights for organising the memorial lecture held in Abuja on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

The Ohanaeze delegation to the event was led by the Deputy President-General, Okey Nwadinobi, who represented the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, John Azuta Mbata. Dr. Chukwu was also among the dignitaries in attendance.

The organisation said it joined eminent Nigerians in celebrating the enduring contributions of the late Humphrey Nwosu, whom it described as “an illustrious son of Igboland and one of Nigeria’s foremost democratic icons.”

According to the statement, Nwosu’s courage and commitment during the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election remain a reference point in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

“His courage, integrity, patriotism and unwavering commitment to the people’s mandate during the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election remain a shining reference point in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” Chukwu stated.

Ohanaeze noted that Nwosu’s conduct while overseeing the election demonstrated the importance of principled leadership and strong institutions.

“Professor Nwosu’s principled leadership in the face of enormous pressure demonstrated that strong institutions are built by men and women of character who place national interest above personal considerations,” the statement said.

The organisation added that the late electoral umpire’s contributions continue to inspire efforts aimed at promoting electoral credibility, justice, accountability and good governance across the country.

“His contributions continue to inspire the quest for electoral integrity, justice, accountability and credible governance in Nigeria,” Chukwu added.

Ohanaeze further stressed the importance of recognising and celebrating Nigerians whose sacrifices helped shape the nation’s democratic development.

“Honouring distinguished Nigerians such as Professor Nwosu is essential for preserving the values of transparency, fairness, national unity and democratic accountability which he so courageously defended,” the statement noted.

Reaffirming its commitment to democracy and nation-building, the group pledged continued support for initiatives that strengthen democratic institutions, promote justice and equity, and advance the collective interests of Ndigbo and Nigeria as a whole.

“The apex Igbo body further reiterates its commitment to supporting initiatives that advance the collective good of Ndigbo, strengthen democratic institutions, promote equity and justice, and deepen national cohesion,” Chukwu said.

The organisation concluded by praying that the memory and legacy of Professor Nwosu would continue to inspire Nigeria’s pursuit of a more democratic, just and prosperous future.
