The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Mrs. Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo said the holiday provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and reaffirm their commitment to the principles that sustain democratic governance.

According to the minister, the Federal Government remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving democratic ideals, the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

He also assured citizens that the ministry, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security across the country, noting that a peaceful and secure environment remains critical to national development and democratic stability.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

The minister described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s history, dedicated to honouring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians whose struggles paved the way for democratic rule.

“June 12 every year remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible. Their legacies continue to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” he added.

Nigeria has observed Democracy Day on June 12 since 2018 in recognition of the historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest polls in the country’s history. The annual celebration serves as a reminder of the nation’s democratic progress and the collective responsibility of citizens to safeguard and strengthen democratic institutions.
