The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the selection of former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as the Vice-Presidential candidate to partner former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the party’s bid for the 2027 presidential election.

The decision, according to the party, followed extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives across all geopolitical zones.

In a statement issued on June 15, 2026, and signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the choice of Amaechi came after the conclusion of its presidential primaries, where he emerged as runner-up.

“The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), after extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives of all geopolitical zones, is proud to announce that the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been selected as the Vice-Presidential Candidate of our great party for the 2027 Presidential Election,” the statement read.

The party described the Atiku–Amaechi pairing as a strategic political alliance between two experienced statesmen with the capacity to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges and reposition the country for stability and development.

According to the ADC, the partnership reflects a deliberate effort to present a national ticket capable of bridging regional, generational and political divides.

“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development,” the party stated.

The ADC highlighted Amaechi’s extensive public service record, noting his experience as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation.

It described him as one of the most experienced political leaders in Nigeria’s contemporary democratic history, with a track record spanning legislative leadership, executive governance and federal administration.

“Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government. This depth of experience will be invaluable in supporting the next ADC administration from day one,” the statement added.

The party also said Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South and his ability to build cross-regional alliances strengthen the overall appeal of the ticket.

It argued that the Atiku–Amaechi combination represents a unified national front capable of restoring public trust in governance and driving economic recovery.

“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions,” the ADC said.

At a time of widespread economic hardship and security concerns, the party said the ticket sends a strong message of readiness to govern and deliver results.

“The ADC is prepared to govern, prepared to unite the nation, and prepared to deliver results,” it declared.

The party called on members, coalition partners, civil society groups, youth and women organisations, and Nigerians across the country to support what it described as a historic political journey aimed at national renewal.
