The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor Taiwo Adeshina, popularly known as Elegbeje Ado, after a career that spanned more than two decades.
Adeshina’s passing was announced on Tuesday by fellow actor Kunle Afod, who paid an emotional tribute to the late screen legend in a post shared on his Instagram page.
Expressing grief over the loss, Afod described Adeshina as one of the pioneers whose contributions helped shape the Yoruba film industry.
“We regret to announce the passing of one of the legends of the Yoruba Nollywood industry, Baba Elegbeje Ado.
“Your immense contribution to the growth of Yoruba cinema, your talent, and the joy you brought to countless lives will never be forgotten.
“Thank you for the beautiful memories and the legacy you left behind. May your soul rest in perfect peace.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to your family, friends, colleagues, and fans during this difficult time.
“Rest in peace, Baba Elegbeje Ado. Your legacy lives on forever,” Afod wrote.

According to reports, the veteran actor died on Monday, June 29, following a brief illness, although the exact circumstances surrounding his death had not been independently confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
Widely respected in the Yoruba movie industry, Adeshina built a distinguished acting career portraying traditional rulers, community elders and other culturally significant characters that resonated with audiences across generations.
His popular nickname, “Elegbeje Ado,” originated from one of his most memorable movie roles, a performance that became synonymous with his career and cemented his place among the most recognisable faces in Yoruba cinema.
Beyond the screen, Adeshina was also a Christian minister, balancing his acting career with pastoral responsibilities and earning admiration for his commitment to both faith and the entertainment industry.
His death marks another painful loss for Nollywood, which has witnessed the passing of several notable figures in recent months. Among them was actor Alexx Ekubo, who died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 after complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, fans and admirers, who remember Taiwo Adeshina for his remarkable talent, memorable performances and lasting contribution to the growth of Yoruba cinema.
