The political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections took another twist on Tuesday as the Senator representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District, Ogoshi Onawo, dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), barely two weeks after joining the opposition party.

Onawo’s latest move was formally announced on the floor of the Senate when the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, read his letter of defection during plenary.

In the letter, the lawmaker disclosed that he resigned his membership of the ADC in Galadima Ward, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, with effect from June 15, following what he described as extensive consultations with his constituents and political allies.

“This decision is the outcome of careful reflection and wide-ranging consultations with my constituents, political associates, and other critical stakeholders,” Onawo stated.

Explaining the reason for his latest political switch, the senator cited the internal crisis rocking the ADC, saying the party no longer provides the stability needed for him to effectively serve his constituents.

“It is driven by my firm belief that the prevailing circumstances within the current party structure and the endless legal battle it is currently embroiled in no longer offer the cohesion, support, and enabling environment required for me to focus squarely on effectively representing my constituents and to fully realise the development and progressive mandate they entrusted me.

“However, I now happily join the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). I am grateful for the trust and cooperation I have received from my supporters and well-wishers through this journey,” he said.

Onawo’s defection comes just weeks after he exited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ADC, making him one of the shortest-serving members of the opposition party.

He was among nine senators who announced their defection to the ADC during a Senate plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on March 12, where he said his decision was motivated by his commitment to democratic values and good governance.

His latest exit adds to the growing wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections and is likely to fuel fresh concerns over the internal stability of the ADC as parties intensify preparations for the next electoral cycle.
