The Nigeria Police Force has disclosed how operatives tracked and arrested Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-acclaimed Director-General of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), in Osun State following a court-issued bench warrant.
Adeyemi, who is facing allegations of conspiracy, forgery and impersonation, was apprehended on Tuesday by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) from the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, DSP Biodun Ojelabi, said the operation was carried out by a special team from Abuja, stressing that the state command merely confirmed the development and did not participate in the operation.
According to him, the suspect was arrested at his hideout in Osun State during the early hours of Tuesday.
“We are aware that the individual parading himself as the Director-General of the controversial PFIPC, Adeyemi, was picked up today in the state,” Ojelabi said.
“The team that effected the arrest came from the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
“He was picked up in the early hours by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT),” he added.
The police spokesman, however, declined to provide further details on how the operation was executed or the intelligence that led security operatives to the suspect’s location.
Adeyemi’s arrest came hours after Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, issued a bench warrant directing security agencies to arrest him for failing to appear in court for his arraignment.
The defendant is expected to face an eight-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy, forgery and impersonation over his purported operation of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, an agency the Presidency has repeatedly maintained does not exist.
The court had ordered his arrest after he failed to appear to take his plea, despite being scheduled for arraignment, paving the way for Tuesday’s operation by the Force Intelligence Department.
