The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has dissolved its Students’ Union Government (SUG), suspended all union-related activities indefinitely and ordered the outgoing student leaders to hand over all union property while appearing before an investigative panel to account for their administration.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, was conveyed in an official memorandum dated July 19, 2026, and signed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. G. N. Woke, on the instruction of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill R. Chike.
The university announced that the dissolution covers all three arms of the Students’ Union, Hall Representatives and every other Students’ Union activity on campus until further notice.
“I am directed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chike, Princewill R. Chike, to notify the Three Arms of the Students’ Union, Hall Reps. and all other Student Union activities that you have been dissolved with immediate effect until further notice,” the memorandum stated.
As part of the directive, all executive members of the dissolved union have been instructed to immediately surrender every item belonging to the Students’ Union to the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs.
The university specified that the officials must hand over all union property, official documents, financial records, keys, identification materials and any other assets in their possession.
“Consequently, all Executive members are directed to immediately hand over all Union property, official documents, financial records, keys, identification materials and any other item belonging to the Students’ Union in your possession to the Dean of Student Affairs,” the memo added.
Beyond the handover, the affected student leaders have also been directed to present themselves before an investigative panel constituted by the university whenever invited to explain and account for their stewardship while in office.
The institution warned that failure to comply with the directives would attract disciplinary measures.
“All affected officers are expected to comply with this directive promptly. Failure to do so will attract appropriate disciplinary action,” the university stated.
Copies of the memorandum were forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Registrar, Bursar, Chief Security Officer, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments and other relevant offices across the institution.
Despite announcing the sweeping action, the university did not disclose the reasons behind the dissolution of the Students’ Union or the specific issues the investigative panel is expected to examine.
