The Nigeria Police Force has announced the death of two of its senior officers, retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police Adeleke Taiwo Olatunde and Commissioner of Police Hassan Saleh Gwani, describing their passing as a painful loss to the Force and the nation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the two officers served the Nigeria Police Force with distinction, dedication and professionalism for nearly three decades.
According to the statement, AIG Adeleke Taiwo Olatunde (Rtd) died at his residence in Lagos on July 23, 2026, while CP Hassan Saleh Gwani passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the Saudi German Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, after a brief illness.
The force spokesman said Olatunde joined the Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992, and rose through the ranks during a distinguished career that spanned more than 33 years.
He served in several key operational and command positions across Abia, Lagos, Osun and Benue State Commands, as well as the Force Headquarters.
His notable appointments included Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ikire; Assistant Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Western Port Authority, Lagos; Commander of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters; and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations.
Olatunde retired honourably from the Nigeria Police Force on November 3, 2025, and is survived by his wife and children.
The statement also noted that CP Hassan Saleh Gwani, a native of Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, was born on November 11, 1970, and enlisted in the Force on November 10, 1997.
During his close to three decades of service, Gwani held several strategic positions before his death while receiving medical treatment in Cairo.
According to the Force, he was laid to rest in Cairo, Egypt, in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Inspector-General of Police and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force extended their condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased officers, describing their careers as exemplary and marked by unwavering commitment to national service.
“The leadership of the Force conveys its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the departed officers, commending their selfless service and honor to the nation. The Nigeria Police Force prays that Almighty God grants their souls eternal rest and gives their families the fortitude to bear these irreplaceable losses,” CSP Iniedu said.
