A Kano State High Court has sentenced a newlywed, Saudat Jibril, to death by hanging after finding her guilty of murdering her husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after their wedding.
Justice Maryam Sabo delivered the judgment on Thursday, ruling that the prosecution had proved the charge of culpable homicide beyond reasonable doubt.
The tragic incident occurred in May 2025 in Farawa, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, where the couple had been living shortly after their marriage. The case attracted widespread public attention due to the circumstances surrounding the killing.
During the trial, counsel to the Kano State Government, Barrister Lamido Abba Soron Dinki, led the prosecution and called three witnesses to establish the state’s case against the defendant.
The defence, represented by Barrister Abdulfatah Muhammad, presented Saudat Jibril as the sole witness in her own defence.
In her judgment, Justice Sabo held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was credible and sufficient to secure a conviction.
The court subsequently found Saudat Jibril guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced her to death by hanging in accordance with the law.
