A major emergency has been declared in Suffolk after a large wildfire swept across Dunwich Heath, forcing the evacuation of nearby residents and prompting a large-scale response from emergency services.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said approximately 90 firefighters have been deployed to tackle the wind-fuelled blaze, which ignited on Wednesday and spread quickly across the heath due to the combination of dry vegetation and strong winds.
People staying in nearby homes and caravan parks were moved to safety as authorities urged members of the public to avoid Dunwich Beach and surrounding roads. Officials warned that keeping the area clear is essential to allow emergency crews to continue firefighting operations safely and efficiently.
Despite the fire’s proximity to the Sizewell B nuclear power station, emergency officials have confirmed there is currently no threat to the facility. They noted, however, that the incident remains fast-changing and is being monitored continuously as firefighters work to contain the flames.
The wildfire comes during an unusually hot and dry summer across the United Kingdom. Weather experts have warned that the prolonged heatwave has created ideal conditions for severe wildfires, particularly in southern England, where vegetation has become extremely dry.
