Motorists and passengers were stranded on the Ore-Benin section of the Lagos-Benin Expressway after heavy rainfall flooded a portion of the highway, triggering severe traffic congestion and disrupting movement along one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.
Eyewitness videos from the scene showed passengers gathered along the roadside as they waited for the floodwaters to recede, with several commuters expressing frustration the recurring inundation of the highway whenever there is prolonged rainfall.
One of the affected motorists, identified simply as Henry, described the ordeal as traumatic and appealed to government authorities to urgently address the persistent flooding before it leads to more serious consequences.
The incident reportedly caused significant travel delays, leaving many road users stuck for hours as motorists cautiously manoeuvred through the flooded section in an effort to avoid accidents and vehicle damage.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of the Ore axis during the rainy season. Frequent downpours often overwhelm existing drainage infrastructure, resulting in flooding that disrupts traffic and poses risks to commuters.
The Ore-Benin corridor remains a critical national highway, serving as a major link between Lagos, Ondo and other South-West states with Edo, the South-South and the South-East. The route plays a vital role in the movement of passengers, commercial goods and petroleum products across the country.
