President Bola Tinubu has declared that political opponents are free to contest for power, insisting that competition is a normal part of democracy. He also defended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), maintaining that the electoral body remains impartial and has not intimidated any political actor. Speaking on the country’s political climate, the President said power contests are an inherent feature of democratic governance and expressed confidence that the electoral process would remain fair. He also dismissed allegations of bias against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that the commission has conducted itself as a neutral institution.
According to Tinubu, criticisms from some opposition figures stem from fear rather than evidence of electoral interference. He argued that their concerns reflect anxiety over their political prospects and the alliances they have formed ahead of future elections.
In his words: “Those who will take power from me will try. All is fair in politics and INEC is neutral. They’ve never intimidated anybody. My opponents are crying because they are afraid of their shadow and the kind of company they keep. We will wrestle each other to the finish point.”
The remarks come amid heightened political activity and growing discussions surrounding Nigeria’s electoral process, with parties and prospective candidates positioning themselves ahead of future political contests.
