The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has suffered another setback ahead of the 2027 general election following the resignation of its Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate, Senator Rufai Hanga, who announced his immediate exit from the party.
Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District, conveyed his decision in a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the NDC in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The serving senator said his decision followed “careful reflection and personal deliberation,” adding that he was leaving the party to pursue personal commitments and career aspirations.
“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” Hanga stated.
He added:
“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.”
Despite his departure, the lawmaker expressed appreciation to the party’s leadership and members for the support and cooperation he enjoyed during his time in the NDC.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party,” he wrote.
“I cherish the relationships built and the experiences shared during our political activities together.”
Hanga also disclosed that he had returned his party membership card and requested that his name be removed from the NDC’s membership register.
“Please find attached my official NDC membership card. I request that my name be formally removed from the party register at the ward level,” he stated.
He wished the party success in its future political activities but did not indicate his next political destination or whether he intends to join another political platform.
The resignation comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with defections and shifting alliances continuing to reshape the country’s political landscape.
Although Hanga did not reveal his next move, his exit is expected to fuel fresh speculation over his political future and the implications for Kano State politics, while dealing another blow to the NDC’s ranks in the Senate.
