The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Engr. Vincent Ekwekwu, has been honoured with the Kwame Nkrumah Grow Africa Prize for Excellence by the Grow Africa Youth Initiative in recognition of his leadership, service to humanity and contributions to Africa’s development.
The award was presented on Monday during a courtesy visit by officials of the youth organisation to EEDC’s corporate headquarters, Power House, Enugu, where the company was also recognised for its contributions to the electricity sector and its sustained organisational achievements.
Leading the delegation, the President of the Grow Africa Youth Initiative, Comrade Ozim Temple, said the prestigious award celebrates Africans whose lives embody selfless service, visionary leadership, Pan-African ideals and commitment to human capital development.
According to him, the organisation is committed to building a continent driven by patriotism, respect for human rights and responsible leadership.
“We identify and honour outstanding institutions, leaders, and role models within the African continent who have made significant impact and distinguished themselves in their various areas of endeavour,” Ozim said.
“It is against that backdrop that we are here to honour the Managing Director/CEO of EEDC and its management and staff.”
He explained that the Grow Africa Youth Initiative is a youth-focused organisation dedicated to promoting leadership, entrepreneurship and Pan-Africanism by equipping young Africans to become globally competitive and socially responsible.
Ozim disclosed that the organisation is currently implementing major programmes, including the Drug Abuse Sensitization and Agriculture for All initiatives, aimed at empowering young people while encouraging positive societal change across Africa.
Presenting the award, he described Engr. Ekwekwu as an exceptional leader whose commitment to excellence and youth development reflects the values associated with Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
“You are an outstanding engineer, a lover of youths with a charismatic personality, and a true son of Africa,” he said.
The delegation also presented a commendation to the management and staff of EEDC in recognition of the company’s achievements and contributions toward delivering on its mandate.
Responding, Engr. Ekwekwu expressed appreciation for the honour, describing it as a recognition that would inspire greater commitment to service and excellence.
He commended the Grow Africa Youth Initiative for its efforts in promoting leadership and youth development across the continent, stressing that Africa’s future depends largely on how effectively its young population is nurtured.
The EEDC chief executive underscored the importance of mentorship and productive youth engagement, urging the organisation to develop sustainable programmes that can be replicated across Africa to empower young people and drive national development.
He maintained that investing in the youth remains one of the most effective ways to secure Africa’s future and build a more prosperous continent.
