Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has called for stronger policies and greater commitment to the care, protection and social inclusion of senior citizens, insisting that supporting the elderly is both a moral responsibility and a legal obligation.
The governor made the call on Wednesday while delivering the keynote address at the 60th birthday symposium of Apostle Bolaji Oluwayanmife Akinyemi, Convener of The Apostolic Roundtable, President of Voice of His Word Ministries and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Project Victory Call Initiative (PVC Naija), held at the NAFOWA Hall, Children’s Park, Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja, Lagos.
The event also featured the unveiling of Apostle Akinyemi’s new book, Global Leadership Code: Donald J. Trump As A Case Study, and attracted prominent religious, political and civic leaders from across the country.
Speaking on the theme, “Life at 60: Senior Citizens, Government’s Role and the Citizens’ Pact,” Otti described the celebrant as a man whose life reflects courage, integrity and selfless service to God and humanity.
He said Apostle Akinyemi had consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to nation-building, civic responsibility and the advancement of God’s kingdom.
The governor stressed that societies flourish when leaders govern with vision and citizens embrace accountability and shared responsibility.
According to him, meaningful development can only be achieved through responsible leadership and active citizen participation.
Highlighting his administration’s efforts to improve the welfare of older persons, Otti pointed to the Abia State Senior Citizens Centre Law No. 4 of 2025, describing it as a landmark legislation that guarantees care, protection and social inclusion for residents aged 60 years and above.
He explained that the law provides access to healthcare, welfare support, emergency assistance and protection from abuse, adding that implementation structures have already been put in place.
The governor added that ongoing investments in healthcare, education and road infrastructure are aimed at creating opportunities for younger generations while ensuring senior citizens enjoy dignity, security and quality healthcare in retirement.
Congratulating Apostle Akinyemi on attaining the milestone age of 60, Otti commended him for marking the occasion through intellectual engagement and national discourse.
He urged Nigerians to embrace patriotism, constructive dialogue and collective responsibility in building a stronger nation.
Also speaking, Pastor Goke Poka of House on the Rock Ministries underscored the importance of loyalty and nation-building, saying true loyalty should extend beyond personal interests to include commitment to God, society and national progress.
The celebration climaxed with Governor Otti joining Apostle Akinyemi and other dignitaries to cut the 60th birthday cake and officially unveil the celebrant’s latest book, Global Leadership Code: Donald J. Trump As A Case Study.
The event also featured goodwill messages, prayers and tributes in honour of Apostle Akinyemi’s contributions to ministry, leadership development and nation-building.
