The Anambra State Police Command has announced the assumption of duty of CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, as the new Commissioner of Police in the state, with the new police chief pledging to consolidate security gains and intensify the fight against crime.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, August 10, 2026, by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, in Awka.
Oji Ama takes over from the immediate past Commissioner of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
A highly experienced senior police officer, Oji Ama has over three decades of service in the Nigeria Police Force. Before his deployment to Anambra, he served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja, having previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.
A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Oji Ama holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Jos. He began his police career as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and received his initial training at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
His career has spanned intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.
Among his previous appointments are Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, FCID, Abuja; Commanding Officer, No. 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia; Commanding Officer, No. 11 PMF, Calabar; and Divisional Police Officer in Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji, FCT.
He also served as Coordinator of Courses at the Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer, No. 26 PMF, Uyo; Divisional Crime Officer, Sango-Otta, Ogun State; and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, among other strategic positions.
Oji Ama has undergone several professional and strategic training programmes in Nigeria and abroad, including the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; and the Incident Site Commander’s Course organised by the British High Commission College of Policing.
He has also attended courses in Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management, Advanced Detective Studies, Squadron Command and Combat Operations.
His record of service includes a commendation for uncommon bravery, courage and gallantry following the recovery of an AK-47 rifle during a shootout with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, in 2007.
The new Commissioner is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
Upon assuming office, Oji Ama said he would consolidate existing security gains in Anambra while strengthening collaboration between the Police and other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders.
He assured residents, visitors and businesses across the state of the Command’s renewed determination to protect lives and property, prevent and combat crime, uphold the rule of law and create a safer environment for all.
The new police chief’s deployment comes as the Command seeks to sustain security operations and deepen community-based policing across Anambra.
