Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has congratulated former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on his 85th birthday, describing him as the “Father of Abia State” for his role in the creation of the state 35 years ago.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 17, 2026, by his Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, Governor Otti described Babangida as a visionary statesman whose administration created Abia State on August 27, 1991.
“On behalf of the Government and good people of Abia State, I heartily congratulate President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida on attaining this remarkable age of 85,” Otti stated.
The governor recalled the significance of Babangida’s decision to create Abia State, noting that the development had enabled the state to make significant contributions to Nigeria’s growth and development.
“We recall with deep appreciation that 35 years ago, under your administration as Head of State, Abia State was created. That historic decision gave birth to a State that has continued to make significant contributions to the growth and development of our nation,” he said.
Otti, through his Chief Press Secretary, disclosed that the Abia State Executive Council had formally congratulated Babangida during its weekly meeting in commemoration of his 85th birthday.
The council appreciated the former Military President for his role in the creation of Abia State and described him as the “Father of Abia State.”
It also thanked Almighty God for preserving Babangida and sustaining him in good health to attain the milestone age.
The governor prayed that God would continue to grant the former military ruler wisdom, strength and peace, while blessing him with many more years of life and service to the nation.
