The United States Embassy in Abuja has warned American citizens in the Nigerian capital to exercise caution ahead of a planned protest by retired military personnel on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

The embassy issued the security alert on Tuesday, August 18, following plans by the retirees to protest over unmet pension adjustments.

According to the advisory, the demonstration is expected to take place in the morning around the Ministry of Defence, with the possibility of significant traffic congestion and temporary road restrictions in the area.

The embassy said movement could be disrupted along Olusegun Obasanjo Way and adjoining routes near the Ministry of Defence, depending on the size of the protest.

It consequently advised American citizens to avoid the protest area, use alternative routes and remain vigilant around large gatherings.

The planned demonstration by the military retirees is expected to draw attention to their grievances over pension adjustments, with the US Embassy warning its citizens to take precautions as the protest unfolds.

The alert comes as Abuja prepares for possible movement disruptions around the affected routes on Wednesday.
