A police-led joint security team has intercepted two vehicles and arrested nine suspects during a stop-and-search operation in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, recovering three AK-47 rifles, a pump-action gun, charms and other items.
The operation was conducted in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, by the Joint Operation Base, Aguata, led by the Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Austin Elaigwu, in collaboration with personnel of the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service and operatives of the Agunechemba Security Outfit.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu Anthony, the security team intercepted a custom-coloured Sienna and an ash-coloured Toyota RAV4 at a checkpoint in Isuofia.
The operation led to the arrest of nine suspects—seven males and two females.
A search of the vehicles reportedly resulted in the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, charms and other items considered relevant to the investigation.
The suspects and recovered items were subsequently taken into custody for questioning and further investigation.
Suspects Claim to Be Security Operatives
The police said preliminary interrogation showed that the suspects claimed to be security operatives based in a neighbouring state.
However, they allegedly failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding their identities, affiliations, possession of the firearms and the purpose of their movement into Anambra State.
The Command said the circumstances surrounding their movement and the recovered weapons would form part of the ongoing investigation.
Commending the operatives, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, praised the joint security team for what he described as a job well done.
The Commissioner encouraged security personnel to remain vigilant, stressing that the recovery demonstrated the importance of intelligence-led policing and effective stop-and-search operations in preventing security threats.
The Command said investigation into the incident was ongoing.
