The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has appointed Enugu-born Nigerian-American businessman, academic and writer, Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, as the leader of its chapter in Enugu State.

Ogbonnia, Chairman of Houston-based petroleum and energy company, First Texas Energy Corporation, emerged as the party’s state leader following an expanded state executive meeting held in Enugu on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

The decision was contained in a statement signed by the party’s Secretary, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, who said Ogbonnia’s emergence was based on his commitment to the growth of the NDC and his support for the electoral victory of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Okafor said the appointment followed extensive deliberations by members of the expanded executive, who considered Ogbonnia’s experience, capacity and commitment to democratic development.

He said the new leadership arrangement was aimed at strengthening coordination among party members and providing effective direction as the party intensifies preparations for forthcoming political activities and elections.

According to Okafor, “The party is focused on building a united structure that will work collectively towards electoral victory, which is why it was created in the first instance. With someone like Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, who has demonstrated a strong commitment to the growth and stability of the NDC in Enugu State, victory is assured come 2027.

“This is because his background in business, academia and public affairs will bring valuable experience to the party’s leadership, and we believe that his experience and exposure will contribute meaningfully to the development of the NDC in Enugu State.”

The party secretary called on members and supporters to rally behind the new leadership, stressing the need for unity, discipline and collective responsibility.

“This is a time for unity, discipline and collective responsibility among members of the party. The party remains committed to presenting a credible political alternative to the people of Enugu State and Nigeria. Our objective is clear: to build a strong political platform capable of delivering the change Nigerians are demanding,” Okafor said.

NDC Chairman Backs New Leadership

Also speaking, the NDC State Chairman, Dr. Johnpaul Anih, congratulated Ogbonnia on his emergence, describing him as a leader with the experience and capacity required to advance the party’s fortunes in the state.

Anih commended the leadership of the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, and National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, for their efforts to unite the party across Nigeria, particularly in Enugu State.

He assured members that the state executive would continue to mobilise support and consolidate the party’s structures across the state.

The chairman also urged other party leaders to join the state structure in Oji River on Wednesday as the NDC prepares to officially commence its campaign for the forthcoming local government elections.
