The Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused Chief Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, whom it described as a factional governorship candidate, of working for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and warned party supporters against donating to his campaign.
The party’s State Secretary, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, made the allegation in a statement issued to journalists in Enugu on Wednesday, September 3, 2026.
Okafor alleged that Ohaa did not emerge from any recognised governorship primary conducted by either the National Working Committee or the Enugu State chapter of the NDC.
He challenged Ohaa and his associates to produce evidence of the primary election through which they claimed he emerged as the party’s governorship candidate.
The NDC secretary also questioned the activities of what he described as a faction backing Ohaa, alleging that its actions had contributed to the crisis within the party.
According to Okafor, Ohaa’s political activities in both the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the NDC demonstrated what he described as a recurring pattern of internal division and crisis.
“NDC Enugu cannot field APC to fight APC. Our candidate must represent the genuine interests, principles and aspirations of the NDC. His activities show that he is working for either the Governor or APC, and ndị Enugu are already aware of it. That is why he has never been part of any political opposition without crisis.”
Okafor also challenged Chukwujekwu Nebo, whom he described as one of Ohaa’s known aides, to produce documentary evidence of the alleged party congress that purportedly produced him as secretary of the faction.
He said the documents should indicate the date, venue, delegates and officials who supervised the exercise.
The party secretary further argued that anyone seeking to govern Enugu State must demonstrate leadership capacity, intellectual competence and a clear commitment to addressing the challenges confronting the state.
He questioned Ohaa’s suitability for the governorship, citing what he described as concerns surrounding his political antecedents, capacity and leadership approach.
“Leadership of Enugu State requires competence, character and a clear development agenda. The electorate deserves to know the process through which every candidate emerged. You cannot want to lead Enugu using an illegal means. It shows that the person isn’t a contender but a joker. Enugu APC has been praying for their stooge to emerge using all the possible antics that they could, but we will not agree.”
Okafor also warned prospective donors against providing financial support to what he described as Ohaa’s disputed campaign structure.
He claimed that more than five court cases were challenging issues surrounding Ohaa’s political position, urging supporters to establish the legal status of the process that produced his candidacy before committing their resources, irrespective of who submitted his name.
The NDC official further questioned why the party’s National Working Committee would support what he described as an unpopular candidate whose nomination, according to him, was not reflected in the relevant documents submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“People should demand verifiable evidence before donating money to a disputed political campaign. Transparency is necessary to protect both the party and its supporters. Any application to INEC for CTC of NDC primary will always show that he never emerged. So, how would he want to be a candidate? Except maybe he is on a mission to cause heavy electoral defeat for the party.”
Okafor reiterated that the Enugu State chapter recognises Prof. Ene Nwannaji as the duly elected governorship candidate of the NDC in the state.
He called for the dispute to be resolved through the appropriate party and legal channels, stressing that the NDC should concentrate on presenting a credible candidate capable of uniting its members and winning the confidence of Enugu voters.
