More than 500 young people in Enugu State have been equipped with high-demand digital skills under the Enugu Digital Skills Grant, in a government-backed effort to expand access to technology careers, strengthen youth employability and position residents for opportunities in the global digital economy.
The development was disclosed in a statement on the impact of the programme, implemented through the Enugu MSME & Startup Agency (Enugu SME Center) in partnership with AltSchool Africa and private-sector partners.
The initiative was designed to address one of the major barriers confronting young people seeking technology careers—the high cost of quality digital education—by connecting beneficiaries to world-class training opportunities at reduced financial barriers.
More than 500 Ndi Enugu participated in the programme, undertaking training across Software Engineering, Data, Cybersecurity, Cloud Engineering, Product Design, Product Management and other high-demand technology fields.
Beyond the number of participants, the programme is intended to create a pipeline of skilled young people capable of securing jobs, building enterprises and competing for opportunities beyond Nigeria.
The statement said the initiative was conceived to go beyond enrolling young people in another training programme, stressing that the broader objective was to create a credible pathway through which Ndi Enugu could acquire globally relevant skills and recognised qualifications.
“When we launched the Enugu Digital Skills Grant, the ambition was bigger than simply enrolling young people in another training programme. We wanted to create a credible pathway for Ndi Enugu to acquire globally relevant skills, earn recognised qualifications, and position themselves for opportunities in an increasingly digital world,” the statement said.
It noted that each beneficiary represented more than a statistic, describing the participants as young people deliberately investing in skills that could change their career and economic prospects.
“Behind every enrolment is a young person who decided to invest in themselves. Someone learning to code, analyse data, design products, solve problems differently, or prepare for a career they may once have thought was beyond their reach,” it said.
According to the statement, some of the beneficiaries’ experiences and aspirations are documented in a documentary showcasing their individual journeys and the impact of the training.
The programme forms part of the human-capital development agenda of the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, with emphasis on expanding access to quality training and creating stronger links between skills acquisition, employment and entrepreneurship.
The statement said the administration’s approach was deliberate: identify quality training opportunities, make them more accessible to young people and establish pathways through which acquired skills can translate into jobs and businesses.
“Under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, our approach to human capital development remains deliberate: connect our young people to the best training we can find, make that training more accessible, and build stronger pathways from skills to jobs and enterprise,” it said.
The intervention comes amid growing demand for digital skills globally, with technology-driven sectors creating new opportunities for workers and entrepreneurs able to compete in an increasingly interconnected economy.
For Enugu, the programme represents an effort to move youth development beyond conventional skills acquisition towards building a workforce capable of participating in the global technology ecosystem.
“We are building more than digital skills,” the statement said. “We are building Enugu’s next generation of global talent.”
