The Global Executive Council (GEC) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has fixed October 24, 2026, for a fresh general election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.
The decision followed a crucial meeting between the GEC delegation from the national secretariat in Enugu and stakeholders of the FCT Chapter in Abuja on Saturday, September 6, 2026, aimed at resolving the longstanding internal crisis and factionalisation within the chapter.
The development was contained in a statement signed by Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Global Publicity Secretary, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
The national delegation was led by the Deputy President General, Prince Okey Nwadinobi, who conveyed the goodwill of the President General, Senator Azuta Mbata, and urged members of the FCT Chapter to prioritise peace, unity, reconciliation and the collective interests of Ndigbo.
Nwadinobi said the delegation’s primary mandate was to constitute an independent Electoral Committee to oversee the fresh election, stressing that the committee must be free from external interference.
He said the committee was expected to conduct a credible, transparent, inclusive and peaceful electoral process capable of restoring stability to the FCT Chapter.
The election has been scheduled for October 24, 2026, while the Electoral Committee is expected to publish the election guidelines within two weeks.
The committee is chaired by Chief Ejiofor Onyia, with Ambassador Eddy Onuoha as Deputy Chairman and H.E. Emeka Sibeudu as Secretary.
Other members are Prince Okey Nwadinobi, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, Chief Charles Nkata, Esq., and Barr. Chizoba Iheka.
In addition, each of the six recognised groups within the FCT Chapter is expected to nominate a representative to the Electoral Committee.
The development is expected to pave the way for a fresh leadership structure and provide a lasting resolution to the internal disputes that have divided the FCT Chapter in recent years.
At the meeting, representatives of all six groups signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), committing themselves to respect the agreed peace pact, electoral process and resolutions reached by the stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of the Electoral Committee, Onuoha expressed appreciation to the national delegation for its intervention and pledged that the committee would discharge its responsibilities with diligence and impartiality.
He also appealed for continued support and cooperation from the GEC and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the electoral process.
The meeting was attended by several prominent Igbo leaders, including Chief Ibe Nwosu (Igbo I), Prof. Charles Nwekeaku, Barr. Onwu O. Arua, Chief Andrew Ugwu, Odozi Nwodozi, Igwe Raymond Ugwuagbo, Henshaw Ogubuike, Esq., Mrs. Esther Ezeji and Chief Ifeanyi Nwaka, among others.
The stakeholders subsequently pledged their support for the peace process and the October 24 election as part of efforts to restore unity and stability to the Ohanaeze FCT Chapter.
