The Enugu State Police Command has arrested two suspected thieves in separate operations in Nkanu West Local Government Area and New Haven, Enugu, recovering a stolen motorcycle, tricycle, Point-of-Sale (POS) machine and other items allegedly linked to theft.
The command also recovered two bags containing 112 new wrappers and 29 female handbags, as well as a heavy-duty cable cutter, after suspected thieves reportedly abandoned the items and fled during a police operation in New Haven.
According to a statement issued on Friday, September 11, 2026, by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the first arrest occurred on September 9 at about 5:00 p.m. when operatives attached to Nkanu West Division, assisted by Forest Guards, apprehended 24-year-old Nnamani Chekube Eze at Akpugo.
Ndukwe said the suspect was allegedly found in possession of an unregistered Sanya motorcycle reportedly stolen from a male victim at Obuno-Akpugo, Nkanu West LGA.
He added that the suspect had made a confessional statement and was assisting the police with the ongoing investigation.
In a separate operation on August 30, operatives of the New Haven Division arrested one Godwin Emmanuel at an uncompleted building near WAEC Bus Stop, Independence Layout, Enugu, at about 7:00 p.m.
According to the statement, the suspect was apprehended while in possession of a tricycle reported stolen earlier that day from a church within the area.
Ndukwe further disclosed that Emmanuel allegedly confessed to stealing a Sumo pumping machine at Maryland, Enugu.
He said the suspect and the recovered tricycle were subsequently handed over to the Independence Layout Police Division, where Emmanuel was arraigned and remanded in Correctional Custody by a court.
Meanwhile, the Command said another operation was launched on September 3 following an alert from residents about suspected thieves moving from Ugbo-Okonkwo towards the Powerline area of New Haven.
Police operatives from the New Haven Division reportedly mobilised immediately to the area, forcing the suspects to abandon two bags and flee.
With assistance from the Neighbourhood Watch, the police recovered the bags, which contained 112 new wrappers and 29 female handbags.
The items were subsequently identified and returned to their rightful owners, while a POS machine and heavy-duty cable cutter were also recovered.
The Command said the suspect arrested in connection with the motorcycle theft would be arraigned in court after the conclusion of investigations, while efforts had been intensified to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Commenting on the operations, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the police operatives, community members and security groups for their vigilance and cooperation.
Giwa directed that the fleeing suspects be identified, arrested, investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He also reassured residents of the command’s “unwavering commitment to making Enugu State unconducive for unrepentant criminals.”
