The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suffered a fresh setback ahead of the 2027 general elections following the resignation of its National Assistant Secretary, Hassan Muhammadu, from the party.
Muhammadu, who also served as the North-East Zonal Secretary of the party, announced his immediate resignation from both positions and his withdrawal from the ADC in a letter dated September 9, 2026.
The letter, addressed to the Chairman of the ADC in Bojude Ward, Kwami Local Government Area of Gombe State, was made available to journalists on Sunday.
In the letter, Muhammadu said his decision to quit the opposition party was reached “with deep reflection,” while expressing appreciation to the ADC and its leadership for the opportunity to serve at both the national and zonal levels.
He wrote: “It is with deep reflection and esteemed regard that I wish to withdraw my membership from the ADC and also resign my position as the National Assistant Secretary and the Zonal Secretary of the North East Zonal Working Committee of the Party.”
The former ADC national officer thanked the party and its leaders for entrusting him with responsibilities at the national and zonal levels.
He also disclosed that copies of his resignation letter had been forwarded to the National Chairman of the party, Senator David Mark, through the Zonal Chairman, Mr Daniel Modu Bwala, as well as to the Gombe State leadership of the ADC.
The resignation letter was also copied to the party leader in Gombe and the Chairman of the North-East Zonal Working Committee.
Muhammadu, a former Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development in Gombe State, did not disclose any specific reason for his decision to leave the ADC in the resignation letter.
However, political sources familiar with the development said the former commissioner was expected to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), where he would reportedly support the party’s governorship candidate, Dr Jamilu Isiyaku Gwamna.
Sources within Gwamna’s camp said Muhammadu’s reported move would strengthen the APC’s political structure in Kwami Local Government Area and across Gombe Central ahead of the 2027 elections.
They described the former commissioner as a significant political asset, citing his previous positions at both national and zonal levels in the ADC.
According to the sources, his experience and political network would be valuable to the APC in the 2027 elections “given his status at both national and zonal levels.”
