The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old woman, Mrs. Ogechi Ofoma, following the alleged brutal abuse of her seven-year-old daughter, Oluebube Ofoma, in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday, September 14, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said the command received a report of alleged child abuse and severe bodily injuries involving the girl on the evening of Sunday, September 13.
According to Ikenga, the child was rescued after security personnel from Ibollo Community, Awada-Obosi, and concerned residents intervened following reports of the alleged abuse.
Preliminary information indicated that the girl was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse, including injuries reportedly inflicted with a hot knife.
The statement said the prompt intervention of the community security personnel and residents prevented the child from suffering further harm and led to the immediate arrest of her mother, who is now assisting the police with the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has also commenced collaboration with the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare to secure urgent medical attention, protection and other necessary welfare support for the victim.
Ikenga said the command commended the Ibollo Community security personnel and residents for their vigilance, courage and public-spirited intervention, which he said helped save the child and enabled police action to commence immediately.
He said the police investigation would be thorough, professional and uncompromising, with the welfare, safety and best interests of the child remaining paramount.
The command also assured members of the public that it would continue to work with relevant government agencies and other stakeholders to protect vulnerable persons and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable in accordance with the law.
