Former Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi, has formally commenced his tenure as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic after presenting his Letters of Credence to the President of Greece, Constantine An. Tassoulas.
A statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, said Ugwuanyi presented the Letters of Credence during a ceremony at the Presidential Mansion in Athens, formally marking the beginning of his diplomatic assignment in Greece.
The ceremony was attended by the Greek Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tasos Chatzivasileiou; Secretary General of the Presidency of the Hellenic Republic, Ambassador Aliki Chatzi; Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dimitrios Zevelakis; Vice Admiral Efthymios Mikros, Director of the Military Office of the Presidency; and Ambassador Eleni Goulousi, Director of the Diplomatic Office of the Presidency.
During his audience with President Tassoulas, Ugwuanyi conveyed the warm greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government and people of Nigeria to the Greek President.
The statement said the Nigerian envoy reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Ugwuanyi said his diplomatic engagement would be guided by Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities anchored on the “4Ds” — Democracy, Development, Demography and Diaspora.
The ambassador identified trade and investment, shipping and the Blue Economy, energy, tourism, education and cultural diplomacy as key areas where Nigeria and Greece could deepen bilateral cooperation.
He also emphasised the importance of strengthening people-to-people relations between Nigerians and Greeks as part of efforts to further consolidate ties between both countries.
Ugwuanyi expressed his determination to work closely with the Government of the Hellenic Republic throughout his tenure, while exploring new opportunities capable of expanding cooperation between Nigeria and Greece.
The statement quoted him as reaffirming his commitment to “deepening bilateral relations and advancing cooperation” across strategic sectors of mutual interest.
The presentation of the Letters of Credence formally establishes Ugwuanyi as Nigeria’s ambassador to Greece and marks the commencement of his diplomatic responsibilities in the Hellenic Republic.
