The All Progressives Congress (APC) won four of the five by-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states, while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) secured the remaining seat in Bauchi.
The elections, held to fill one vacant federal legislative seat and four state assembly seats, produced victories for the APC in Gombe, Kano, Delta and one of the two constituencies contested in Bauchi, with the APM taking the other Bauchi seat.
In Gombe State, APC candidate Kallamu MaiJama’a emerged victorious in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye federal constituency by-election with 41,121 votes.
The Labour Party (LP) polled 3,553 votes, while the APM recorded 872 votes.
The APC also secured the Dawakin Kudu state constituency in Kano, where its candidate, Husseini Datti, polled 22,890 votes to emerge winner, according to results announced by INEC Returning Officer Ibrahim Suraj.
The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) scored 270 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recorded 108 votes. The Action Democratic Party (ADP), Action Peoples Party (APP) and LP polled 89, 53 and 39 votes respectively.
In Delta State, APC candidate Okolosi Ator was declared winner of the Udu state constituency by-election after securing 8,724 votes.
The PDP came a distant second with 214 votes in the constituency.
The only constituency not won by the APC was in Bauchi State, where the APM and APC shared the two seats contested.
In the Disina state constituency election, APC candidate Yakubu Ali secured victory with 5,846 votes, while the APM candidate polled 5,225 votes. The PRP recorded 3,701 votes.
The APM, however, bounced back in the Sakwa state constituency in Zaki Local Government Area, where its candidate, Adamu Yakubu, won with 8,515 votes.
The APC polled 3,771 votes in Sakwa, while the PDP recorded 2,076 votes and the PRP scored 727.
Across the four states, reports indicated that the elections were largely peaceful, with logistics arriving on time at many polling locations.
However, low voter turnout was reported in Gombe and Kano, while technical challenges involving the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) were reported in Delta.
The Bauchi State Police Command also disclosed that its operatives arrested 47 suspects at some polling units in Shira Local Government Area.
The suspects allegedly posed as members of a state-owned security outfit and were reportedly found in possession of guns, cutlasses and sticks.
Commenting on the exercise, INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan said the by-elections would provide operational lessons for the commission as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
