The FCT Police Command has traced the mystery surrounding the lifeless body of a man found under the Katampe bridge along the Kubwa Expressway to events at a hotel in Gwarimpa, Abuja.
The body was discovered at about 9am on August 26, 2026, triggering fears among residents and speculation that the deceased may have been a victim of “one chance” robbery or kidnapping. However, FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, said painstaking investigations revealed that the deceased had earlier been reported missing by his family.
Speaking at the FCT Police Command Headquarters in Abuja on Saturday, Sanusi said investigators refused to rely on initial assumptions and instead traced the deceased’s final movements and contacts to establish what happened before his body was abandoned.
“I consequently resolved that the FCT Police Command would not rest at the discovery of the body or accept assumptions about the circumstances of his death. We commenced a painstaking investigation to unravel what actually happened to the deceased,” the Commissioner said.
According to Sanusi, the investigation took a major turn after detectives discovered that the deceased’s mobile phone was missing. Although the phone had been switched off, operatives were able to identify the last person with whom he had communicated.
The trail led investigators to Mrs Rukayat Muhammed of Garki Area 2, who was found to have been in a romantic relationship with the deceased and had saved his contact on her phone as “Safiyat.”
Police subsequently established that Muhammed and the deceased had lodged at Good Samaritan Guest House on 2nd Avenue, Gwarimpa, where they spent some time together.
“The suspect informed us that she discovered the deceased was no longer breathing and had died. Rather than immediately reporting the incident to the Police, the suspect took the deceased’s mobile phone and left the hotel,” Sanusi said.
The Commissioner said further investigation revealed that two members of the hotel management, identified as Ibrahim Omeiza and Kefat Bitrus, later gained access to the room after attempts to contact the occupants failed and allegedly removed the body.
“Our investigation revealed that, instead of reporting the discovery to the Police, two members of the hotel management identified as Ibrahim Omeiza and Kefat Bitrus subsequently removed the body from the room and transported it to Kubwa Expressway by Katampe under-bridge where they dumped it by the roadside, apparently in an attempt to distance the hotel and its management from the incident,” he disclosed.
Sanusi said the development demonstrated the importance of following investigative leads beyond the initial circumstances surrounding a crime, noting that detectives were able to connect the abandoned body at Katampe with events that allegedly occurred at the Gwarimpa hotel.
He, however, stressed that the police had not reached a final conclusion on how the deceased died.
“Let me make it clear that investigations are still ongoing. The exact cause and circumstances of the deceased’s death are still under investigation, other investigative processes are being pursued to determine the full facts of the case,” he said.
Sanusi warned that anyone found to have participated in the death or the subsequent concealment and abandonment of the body would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“Anyone found to have played a role in the death or subsequent concealment and abandonment of the body will be made to face the law,” the CP said.
The Commissioner also cautioned members of the public against concealing information or obstructing police investigations, warning that those involved would eventually be held accountable.
“Those who, rather than assisting law enforcement, have chosen to conceal information, obstruct investigations or otherwise undermine our efforts should understand that the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with them. The law will take its course,” Sanusi warned.
